Egg Photoshop challenge

"THE INCREDIBLE EDIBLE EGG”

It is a popular headline, but that is what the client wants.

The Design Company is located out of your area, but wants you to shoot this because you have been consistently marketing to them with great work.

A local restaurant supply shop wants to produce a series of posters for their clients. This is a proof of concept shot for the designer to present at a presentation. You are getting $600  for this, and if the client buys the concept, you will then shoot 9 more shots for $1400 each.
This is what the designer has told you they want;
  • Clean, bright background.
  • Colors should be muted and not detract from the ‘hero’ of the shot – egg(s)
  • Surface should be clean, NOT a textured, or wooden type surface.
  • Egg(s) should be prominently displayed in the image.

NOTE:
The text at the bottom has to be allowed for. What will you put there?

Nothing in the image should impede the readability of the text. Busy backgrounds, or areas that are too light may cause the reversed (white) text to be difficult to read. Your job as a photographer is to be aware of this so your art director doesn’t pull their hair out having to ‘fix’ the image.

Lighting- Photographing an egg

  • EGG PHOTO CHALLENGE
  •
  • Large white, smooth towels or cloth .
  • Studio or other lighting, as available. If outside, available light.
  • Table(s), desk(s), or other platforms on which to photograph eggs.
 Objective
  • Students use lighting and composition to make a white chicken egg stand out from a white background, by creating a shadow.
  • Use composition (angles) to create and communicate an effective image.
  • Using photo-editing software to create a contact sheet of images taken and an 8-inch-by-10-inch publishable image. If using film, use darkroom techniques and equipment to create a contact sheet and a larger image on available photographic paper.
Critical Engagement Questions
  • How do different angles affect the composition of a photo?
  • How can a photographer manipulate light to create an effective image?
  • How can a photographer take advantage of available light to create an effective image?
  • (Digital) How can appropriate software help create images that effectively communicate with viewers?
Performance of Understanding, Rationale and Timeline
The assignment requires students to create a composition in which a white chicken egg is distinguishable from a white background by creating and using shadows. Students then must create an image that effectively communicates the scene.
Activities
Activity 1
  • Discussion of topic.
  • Students then photograph their eggs.

  • Activity 2
  • (Digital) Students create a contact sheet in available photo-editing software. Students then create an effective 8-inch-by-10-inch image.
Activity 3
  • Students can publish their work, displaying either print, contact sheet, or both on a bulletin or display board, via computer software (PowerPoint or blogger, for example) in an unstructured public setting or to small or large groups.
  • Students can present their work as described to small or large groups, discussing their work and the results
  •
  • Activity 4
  • Students can present one or more images cropped in different ways, horizontally and vertically.
Activity 5
  • Students can judge work of their own class or of another class to determine the most effective images, and justify their decisions using appropriate terminology.
Assessment
Teacher-made matrix, results of student self-evaluation, results of students judging the work of others, as appropriate.
Resources
  • Instructional material on photography
  • Eggs
  • White cloths or towels

Triangle of Exposure

APERTURE -The aperture stop of a photographic lens can be adjusted to control the amount of light reaching the film or image sensor. In combination with variation of shutter speed, the aperture size will regulate the film's or image sensor's degree of exposure to light. Typically, a fast shutter will require a larger aperture to ensure sufficient light exposure, and a slow shutter will require a smaller aperture to avoid excessive exposure.

SHUTTER SPEED- In photographyshutter speed or exposure time is the length of time a camera's shutter is open when taking a photograph.[1] The amount of light that reaches the film or image sensor is proportional to the exposure time.

ISO-Film speed is the measure of a photographic film's sensitivity to light, determined by sensitometry and measured on various numerical scales, the most recent being the ISO system. A closely related ISO system is used to measure the sensitivity of digital imaging systems. ...
